E3 Predictions: Nintendo
Every year before E3 I like to have fun trying to predict what we’ll see. Throughout today I’ve posted a blog for each company expanding on what I’m expecting. I’ve already covered Microsoft and Sony earlier today so here’s my thoughts on what Nintendo will show for their Wii U.
Wii U Games For The ‘Hardcore’
I hate the term hardcore but it’s the quickest way to explain what I mean. It’s common knowledge that the Wii U isn’t doing well. If Nintendo want to avoid another Wii situation, where nobody will develop for the console, they need to prove that mainstream games will sell before it’s too late. They need to show off some games that get their core audience excited. Consider this a hope as well as a prediction.
Super Smash Bros.
Speaking of games that will get their loyal fans excited, Smash Bros would do the trick. So far the Wii U doesn’t seem to have anything that really screams ‘buy me’ but Smash Bros would be a good start…
A New 3D Mario
…And a good follow-up would be a new 3D Mario. Nintendo aren’t stupid, they must be aware how many headlines they’ll get from announcing this. Everyone still has memories of how Mario 64 defined the N64 and Mario Galaxy was easily the Wii’s best game. It’s only a matter of time until this happens and now’s a good time to do it.
Continuing To Be Terrible With Online
Unfortunately I don’t foresee Nintendo finally embracing a better online infrastructure that makes playing together painless. I think the main fear here is the horrible people of the internet ruining Nintendo’s image of being family friendly. For that reason I don’t see Nintendo ever giving us online capabilities that aren’t incredibly limited.
Nintendo know this is their toughest E3 in years. They have to compete with two big upcoming consoles. For that reason I bet they’ve got something in development that’s going to surprise us. As big as Smash Bros and Mario are they’re quite obvious, we need something shocking. Knowing Nintendo it’ll probably be a revival of an old IP with a new twist.
A New SKU
Nintendo have recently been recalling their 8GB white consoles. They claim this is to ‘balance stock’ but I propose this may be because 8GB is about to be phased out and replaced with a higher storage capacity. This would move the black 32GB SKU into being the new lower entry point and create a new higher point with more storage. To make this enticing Nintendo could lock the prices at their current rates meaning the 32GB would be bumped down to the price of the 8GB. That way there’s a price cut of sorts but also a new more enticing version of the console out at the same time.
Bayonetta 2 for Wii U was one of the most surprising announcements of last year. The original Bayonetta was a bit of a cult hit upon its release and with the Wii U the only place to find the sequel that’s quite a win for Nintendo. It’s been a while now since we first heard it was coming so you’d assume they’ve got something to show off by now.
