Batman Arkham Origins: 5 Multiplayer Gangs We’d Like To See As DLC

In Batman Arkham Origins’ online multiplayer mode you play as a gang member of either Bane or Joker’s team of thugs. That’s if you’re not playing as Batman or Robin and handing out vigilante justice anyway.

In gameplay you run around as said gang members gunning down your opponents, and perhaps getting the opportunity to take control of their particular gang leader. Unfortunately so far every gang member and gang leader is male, something I’ll be commenting on soon in an upcoming article. But for now here are my top 5 ideas for alternative gangs and leaders that I’d like to see as DLC, including some neglected female characters.

League Of Assassins

In Game Leader: Shiva or Talia al Ghul

The League Of Assassins would represent a very different type of gang in that they’d basically just be out to slaughter the enemy team in their war on crime. They might be harder to pull off due to the fact they’re essentially ninjas, but throwing in a stealth melee team would certainly shake things up. For the sake of balance though they may have to be present in a separate game mode with Batman and Robin turned off. Perhaps the League are out to butcher the gang while the other team try to achieve a certain objective before losing all their numbers? Shiva would work just fine as the group leader but an alternative choice would be Talia, last seen in Arkham City.

Batman has already fought plenty of League-related ninjas in the Arkham video games.

Poison Ivy

In Game Leader: Ivy (Obviously)

Ivy’s goons could go in either one of two directions. They could be hardcore eco-warriors fighting for her cause, or they could be brainwashed thugs controlled into carrying out her bidding. In both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City we see members of other gangs falling over themselves to please her, but honestly I’d rather see some original characters who’ve joined her of their own free will. Ivy and her nature themed clothing and weapons would be a welcome change from the aesthetics of Joker and Bane.

Although not known for working well with others, I think Ivy would offer a fun alternative group.

The Court of Owls

In Game Leader: A Talon or Owlman

As a big fan of the Court of Owls I couldn’t resist throwing them onto this list. With their iconic white masks and their deadly Talon assassins, they’d be a spooky standout addition.  You’d perhaps need to get a bit creative with the story as to why they’d be taking the other gang head on, but I think it’d be worth it to get them into the game. There’s two different ways they could be approached. Although they’ve never really been portrayed as soldiers, the aristocratic members of the group could be playable characters in their formal clothing and creepy masks. Alternatively you could control their Talon assassins but this would put them in the same category as the League of Assassins, they wouldn’t likely use guns like Joker and Bane’s cronies so they’d need some gameplay tweaks. If Talons were the general playable characters, then the gang leader would likely be Owlman in his bulky armoured suit. Otherwise a lone Talon, male or female, could stand in as the gang leader.

Red Hood/ Red Hood Gang

In Game Leader: Jason Todd/Red Hood One

As with the others, there are two completely different ways that Red Hood could be added. The modern day Red Hood is actually the former Robin Jason Todd. Previously ‘murdered’ by Joker, Jason returned as the gun toting vigilante with a much more lax view on Batman’s ‘no killing’ rule. Under his leadership perhaps we’d play as recruits of Jason’s who are out to rid the city of crime, permanently.

Alternatively, there’s the Red Hood Gang. Recently introduced in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman series, the gang are an organised group of murderers and thieves. All the members of the gang are anonymous, hidden behind red masks. Now there’s some continuity issues here that would have be nudged around as clearly the gang were only active during Batman’s very early days, and the multiplayer mode takes place a few years in. But if you look past the plot hole you’d be able to run around as quite a striking looking band of lunatics.

Anonymity is the name of the game when it comes to this gang.

Mr Freeze

In Game Leader: Mr Freeze (Obviously)

I’d like to see Mr Freeze and his gang included just because the possibility for cold themed puns would be irresistible. Can you imagine his voiceover as the match progresses?

“You’ve just been iced!”

“Let’s give them the cold shoulder.”

“There’s snow better gang than us.”

And that’s the list. A few of those would perhaps be better suited for their own spin-off mode, but that’s kind of the point. Right now the multiplayer mode is fine (apparent from the glaring lack of female characters) but it’s a bit bland too. Joker and Bane’s thugs control almost exactly the same and there’s only one mode available to play. It’s worth mentioning that there is a mode select option, so at the very least the idea of multiplayer DLC for Arkham Origins has been considered. Some of these gangs would offer an opportunity to add some fairly different gameplay.
