30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 6: An Annoying Character

It’s day 6 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.

Day 6 – A Character I Find Annoying

As with many of the questions in the challenge this was one where the answer occurred to me almost instantly: Deadpool.

There was a time when I enjoyed Deadpool comics. Specifically it was the Cable And Deadpool ongoing series which ended in 2008. I thought it struck the right balance of humour and surprisingly human moments. However the following year the character absolutely exploded in popularity, as a semi-fan of the character I found this a little weird but not necessarily a bad thing. Then I actually read the stories. Quickly I grew very sick of Deadpool. Keeping in mind at this time, as well as regular guest appearances and occasional one shots, Deadpool had three ongoing series at once.

A lot of the new stories abandoned the human side of Deadpool to amp up the comedic antics to an obnoxious overload. The character was everywhere spewing of ridiculous lines left and right. Deadpool had achieved a feat I always considered impossible: appear in more simultaneous comics than Wolverine.

I grew so weary of the character I began to actively avoid his appearances, which I continue to do today. Thankfully Marvel have toned down his appearances somewhat in recent years and I’ve found myself tempted to cautiously explore his current offerings. But for now I remain on the fringes out of his reach. I still can’t face another yellow word balloon, he’s just too damn annoying.
