30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 4: Guilty Pleasure
It’s day 4 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.
It wasn’t hard for me to think of what to answer for today’s question. The first thing to pop to mind was Nemesis. It’s a comic that is ridiculous, gorey, crude, rather simplistic and just plain silly. Despite all that, I loved it.
I’d happily state that my comic book tastes are quite diverse. Although my teenage years were dominated by Marvel comics I now read a wide variety of genres by many different publishers. My preference is character driven stories. I prefer Walking Dead, Saga, Fables, etc. Stories with action involved but where the focus is mostly about the characters’ interactions and development. Constant violence rarely excites me. But every now and then I like to take my brain out and read something that’s balls to the wall crazy. Nemesis completely provides that.
The premise of the series is essentially, what if Batman was evil? Not just a jerk or a bad person but absolutely selfishly evil. This isn’t a character study by any means, this is the comic equivalent of a big dumb action movie.
Part of me is embarrassed I had so much fun with the comic. I find myself avoiding mentioning it. But it’d be idiotic of me to hide my enjoyment of something since it seemingly clashes with the rest of my tastes. So although I do feel a little guilty about this one, I love Nemesis.
