30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 23 – Favourite Artist
It’s day 23 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.
Day 23 – Favourite Artist
I’ve already talked about how comic books are wonderfully unique in having such a varied art style. As such I had to really think about this question. When I was younger I always preferred the art that was very no-nonsense. If it was detailed and clean with realistic proportions then I’d eat it up. When things got a bit different and crazy that’d generally turn me off. That looks weird and confusing! What’s going on? I’m sacred! – Says young and naive me, struggling to understand why things look so bizarre. Okay, that’s a bit of a dramatisation but you get the point. That’s changed dramatically in the last few years.
I now enjoy artwork that’s a bit different. Something that has a unique flair to it is far more attractive then simple solid art. Right now my favourite artist is actually a duo rather than one person, it’s the team of Mike Allred on retro inspired pencils and Laura Allred with her brilliantly bright colour work.
I could rave on for a while about how good the art is, but simply put I just think it’s a brilliant classic style that just explodes with personality. So here’s some pictures, which speak far louder than any words I can articulate.
I’ve heard some people say their art takes some getting used to but I’d be stunned if someone could read their work on FF and not come out a fan. It captures so much of the fun spirit of comic books. It’s colourful, dynamic, energetic and just pops right off the page. I love it.
