30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 21 – Favourite Writer

It’s day 21 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.

Day 21 – Favourite Writer

This is a very difficult question to answer. I have many favourite comic book series’ so it was very difficult to pick a favourite series, nevermind a favourite writer. In the end I decided to use the strategy of picking a writer who has absolutely never let me down and one who hasn’t been highlighted in my 30 days yet: Robert Kirkman.

Kirkman is most well known for The Walking Dead, of course. I read Walking Dead month to month and I do very much enjoy it, but I’ve also enjoyed Wolf-Man, Thief of Thieves, Invincible and even Battle Pope.

I think Kirkman is tremendously talented. He’s one of the only writers where if he has written something then I will read it. No questions asked. I feel as if there is practically no risk involved in reading his work as everything he writes seems to be of an incredibly high quality. Even his more mainstream work back at Marvel was fantastic stuff.

His talent, in my opinion, lies in creating compelling characters. Walking Dead in particular lives and dies on how much you care about the characters. Meanwhile over in Invincible he’s telling one of the best super hero stories I’ve ever read. Free from the limitations of a near-static universe Kirkman has been entertainingly ruthless in killing off his cast where appropriate. Invincible has real tension to it that’s lacking in a lot of mainstream super hero books. But it’s not just that danger, every character has a real voice and over time he’s built up a whole world. Then, in a completely different tone, there’s Thief of Thieves which Kirkman is overseeing that tells a more grounded crime based story. He’s even got an all-ages title out there: Super Dinosaur. All these comics are coming out right now, every month.

All in all, I just think the man is great at what he does. Whatever else he starts over the next few years I’ll be right there at issue one.
