30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 18 – Favourite B-List Character

It’s day 18 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.

Day 18 – Favourite B-List Character

This was another very difficult question to answer. There are so many different characters to choose from that I’ve grown to love over the years. As with my favourite character in general, it’s something that’s subject to change based on the day or what I’ve been reading lately. Right now though, my choice is a character that I regularly quote as being one of my favourite two Marvel characters: Mystique.

Mystique has always been my favourite X-Men character. She has an interesting power set for starters, the ability to change into anybody, but it’s her personality that I love. More than any other X-Men villain her motivations are more complicated and morally grey. She was even part of the X-Men herself at one point. She’s a lot more complex than Mr Sinister, Sabretooth or any other long running X-Men villains.

The best Mystique story by far was the solo series written by Brian K. Vaughan. Long before I became entranced by his work on Saga, I was a huge fan of his via Mystique. Unfortunately the series becomes a bit rushed and uneven once he left the book but his time on it created some fantastic stories. It was a mix of espionage and super heroics, with a definite focus on the first.

Her complex morality was explored in depth here, toying with whether she’s a selfish villain or if there’s some real good in her. It’s my favourite theme of her character, when she pops in and out of the lives of the X-Men you never really know what she’s going to do. Beyond that she also has an interesting back story and is one of the oldest members of the cast. Recently in the Get Mystique story arc of Wolverine it was revealed the two of them had crossed paths in the past, showing that there’s lots of potential to flesh out her past as well as her future.

Overall I just think she’s a fantastic character with lots of potential. I would adore it if she got her own ongoing again someday, but for now I’m content with seeing her pop up now and then and causing her usual mischief.
