30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 16 – Funniest Comic
It’s day 16 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.
Day 16 – Funniest Comic Book
I had to think about today’s question. I love comedy comic books but I feel like there’s really not that many of them out there, which is a real shame. The amount of times a comic makes me laugh aloud on a monthly basis isn’t exactly anything worth getting excited over. There’s one comic though that did make me laugh issue-to-issue: Nextwave.
Nextwave was a brilliant series written by Warren Ellis and with art by Stuart Immonen. The comic parodied the Marvel universe, where it was actually set in, and followed a team of five mismatched characters. The team fought many U.W.M.D.s (Unusual Weapon of Mass Destruction) while we were given amusing, and often ridiculous, flashbacks about the characters’ earlier lives.
Originally planned to be an ongoing series it unfortunately ended after twelve issues. There’s been no continuation since but other books such as Ms. Marvel and Marvel Zombies have referenced the series over the years.
Admittedly I’ve not read it for many years now. But I do remember how hilarious I found it. Writing this little blog post has piqued my desire to go back to it, I know what I’ll be reading tonight.
