30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 15 – Currently Reading

It’s day 15 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.

Day 15 – A Picture From A Comic I’m Currently Reading

As those who know me will be aware, I’ve just finished University and I’m now unemployed. Meaning in short: I’m broke. That means my pull list has been completely decimated so right now I’m keeping myself going on a combination of very generous Marvel code donations and reading old comics I never got around to.

Y’see I generally own a few trades that I’ve not read but are sat waiting for a rainy day. I’ll pick up stuff I know is apparently very good and leave it for a time when I feel utterly bored and in need of some new comic goodness. Currently I’m just about to begin reading the Conan hardcover by Becky Cloonan and Brian Wood, which adapts Queen Of The Black Coast.

In my late-teens I was quite a large Conan fan. After spending the majority of my teenage years doing very little reading I felt drawn to try the original Robert E. Howard Conan stories. I devoured every single one.

The format of the original Conan stories is great. They were originally published as short stories in magazines, meaning that unlike most classic series’ there’s no long collection of novels. Instead there’s many short quick tales. From jungles to deserts to ancient tombs Conan traveled all over and met all manner of fascinating and devious characters.

I’d always been aware that Conan had a history with comics but it wasn’t until two creators, whose work I greatly admire, came together that brought me to purchase one of the stories. It also helps that Queen Of The Black Coast is one of my favourites of the original stories. There are particular moments from the story that are very iconic and are burnt vividly into my mind. I can’t wait to see how the comic handles them.
