30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 13 – My Most Read Book
It’s day 13 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.
Day 13 – Most Read Comic Book/A Book I’ve Read More Than 5 Times
I’m the type of person that usually doesn’t return to something after I’ve read it. So the comics that I’ve read more than 5 times I can basically count on one hand. In fact, I only need one finger. I’m fairly certain that the only issue I’ve read five times, and is therefore my most read book, is Irredeemable #1.
Irredeemable is a fantastic series. Written by huge Superman fan Mark Waid the whole series basically asks the premise: What if Superman turned bad? The series doesn’t just answer that question but everything else it implies. Why would he become evil? Was he always that way? How do his former allies react? What happens next?
Of course the comic doesn’t actually star Superman, it’s full of original characters who are actually incredibly fleshed out. Superman’s stand-in, The Plutonian, is a wonderfully flawed and intriguing character too.
Overall it’s an amazing series. It also deals with a lot of serious issues in a very clever and subtle way by giving them a super hero makeover. The tone is very bleak however, it doesn’t hold anything back and it’s also quite mature. If you haven’t read it I highly recommend it, it’s hands down one of the best comics I’ve ever read.
