30 Day Comic Book Challenge Day 12 – A Comic Everyone Should Read

It’s day 12 of the 30-day comic book challenge! Every day I cover a different comic book question, along with the other members of the IGN Assemble Facebook group.

Day 12 – A Comic Everyone Should Read

Superman is boring, out of date and just plain lame – is something I’ve overheard in various different ways over the years. Despite his overwhelming popularity, there’s a lot of comic book readers who just don’t see the appeal of the character. To that I say there’s a comic that everyone should read: What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?

The story originally appeared in Action Comics #775, but it’s been collected since and is also available on Comixology digitally. The premise is basically that a new super hero team have shown up, The Elite, who are rapidly gaining popularity for taking down their enemies, permanently. Furthermore The Elite have a very reckless attitude and take pleasure in what they’re doing. Meanwhile Superman is left looking outdated and irrelevant.

The story is obviously a creative response to the concerns of readers who feel the same thing. I won’t spoil the plot but I’d wager many who dislike Superman, or other similar heroes, may change their mind after this issue. At the very least they’ll understand him better.
